The 20-year-old raced for his fourth European Championship title in the senior category. Then it became the album. But several hours later, the jury turned again.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen (20) first thought that he would become European champion in the senior category in 1500m indoors just before 9:45 pm on Friday. But that was just the beginning of a very dramatic night in Toruń, Poland.

He was the first to cross the finish line in the race, but a few minutes later he received the message that he was disqualified for passing within the marks on the innermost running track.

Norway filed a protest after the decision. Only just before midnight did the jury’s answer finally arrive. Ingebrigtsen recovers the gold medal that he first wanted to take from the Sandnes runner. This has been confirmed by the Norwegian Athletics Association.

– The rules are on my side. I don’t feel like I did anything wrong, there were just too many runners. None of us tried to push, it only happens when too many people come from outside, Ingebrigtsen told NRK.

The ghost of the Norwegian race was the first to the finish line with exactly half a second less than Polish rival Marcin Lewandowski (33).

Crowding

The final race began dramatically when the Norwegian winner appeared to be pushed onto the courts by Lewandowski’s compatriot, Michał Rozmys. Rozmys got in front of Ingebrigtsen on the indoor running track just ahead.

NRK expert Vebjørn Rodal initially thought it would be of no consequence, but became more uncertain after watching the reruns several times.

Ingebrigtsen acknowledged that he stepped onto the track marking the situation.

– I felt that it was a group of Poles trying to prevent him from letting go and crashing into me. I don’t expect there to be any problems, the 20-year-old told NRK right after the race.

Soon after, BBC reporter Jeanette Kwakye told Ingebrigtsen that he was the record. Thus, the local hope and the veteran Lewandowski remained as the winner of the distance of the European Championship for the fourth time in a row.

Sporting director Erlend Slokvik later told NRK that he understood little of the jury’s decision on disqualification.

– We have filed a protest to see the photos of the video, so that we can take it from there. He didn’t gain anything from it. He was prevented, Slokvik said.

Tactical career

Ingebrigtsen’s time on goal 3.37.56 was slightly behind the championship record. Ukrainian Ivan Heshko still has it with 3.36.70 from the European Indoor Championships in 2005.

Even before the start, Gjert Ingebrigtsen revealed that his son would try to flee from the competitors towards the end of the final race. That plan was scrapped by Jakob Ingebrigtsen right after the situation with Rozmys. The young man ran to the head and held it to the end.

Jesús Gómez took third place in the 1,500 meter final on Friday, just like two years ago.

Since before, Jakob Ingebrigtsen has won gold in the European Senior Indoor Championships in 3000 meters. It happened in Glasgow in 2019. He also has two gold medals at the European Outdoor Senior Championships from Berlin in 2018. There he won both the 1500 meters and 5000 meters.
