An unmanned SpaceX rocket completed a successful test flight on Wednesday, but exploded on the ground after landing safely for the first time.
The rocket, a prototype Starship named SN10, completed several maneuvers after launch near Brownsville, Texas. The 10-kilometer journey is described as successful and the rocket landed safely.
But after landing, flames came out of the bottom of the rocket. The crews on the ground tried to put out the fire, but had to surrender. A few minutes later, the rocket exploded. It was thrown into the air and then fell back to the ground.
This is the third time a prototype Starship rocket has exploded. But Wednesday’s attempt was the first time a prototype Starship managed to land safely.
The previous experiment was with the SN9 prototype in early February. It also had a successful test flight, but ended with a crash landing. In December, an earlier prototype, the Starship SN8, faced a similar fate, but even that test was declared successful.
SpaceX hopes that these rockets, which soar 120 meters above the ground, could one day transport humans to the Moon, Mars and even further into space.
