Police were notified of the accident just before 5.30pm on Monday night.
The accident occurred on board a dredging vessel, which was in the port of Gamvik. Another worker on the boat alerted the emergency services after the accident.
– Emergency services rushed to the scene and immediately located a person lying unconscious on the barge, says Finnmark Police District Operations Manager Eirik Pedersen.
Then the emergency services tried to save the man’s life, but could not save it.
The man was pronounced dead at 9:20 p.m.
The dead man in his 20s is from Troms, police say.
The operations manager says they still don’t know the cause of the accident.
– We are initiating an investigation. We will question and conduct technical investigations of the crime scene, says Pedersen.
Create crisis teams
The Svolvær Secora company confirms to iFinnmark that it is one of its employees who has been exposed to the accident. The company is now in the process of implementing the assistance of a local crisis team.
– They will take care of those who are in the facility and provide us with assistance there. A crisis team has also been involved at head office, Secora CEO Jann Arne Eliassen tells the newspaper.
Family members have been notified.
