The coronavirus is neither man-made nor genetically modified, American intelligence concludes.

President Donald Trump and others have suggested that the virus may be man-made and come from a laboratory in Wuhan, the Chinese city where it was first detected and killed.

There is no evidence of this, concludes US intelligence.

Whether the virus occurred as a result of an accident in a laboratory or from contact with animals is still being investigated, said the office of the United States Chief of Intelligence Mike Dempsey, who coordinates the operations of the country’s 16 different intelligence organizations. .

Scientific agreement

– The intelligence community joins the broad scientific consensus that the covid-19 virus is neither man-made nor genetically modified, according to a statement.

– We will continue to investigate all the information and intelligence thoroughly to determine if the outbreak started after contact with infected animals or was the result of a laboratory accident in Wuhan, he says.

– very talking

Earlier this month, Trump commented on a widely circulated social media statement that the coronavirus was deliberately manufactured in a Chinese laboratory.

“We hear that story more and more,” Trump said, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo followed up.

“The fact that we don’t know the answer, that China has not shared the answer with us, is, in my opinion, very, very speaking,” Pompeo said.

Innovative research

Pompeo has demanded that China allow foreign experts to enter the laboratory “so that we can safely determine where the virus originated.”

The Wuhan Institute of Virology is subject to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has conducted cutting-edge research, including on the SARS virus and other viruses that can be transmitted from animals to humans.

Chinese authorities reject claims that the coronavirus originated in this laboratory as “unsubstantiated and manufactured.”
