Former Norwegian Cup general Frode Kyvåg is having bad weather following statements that “abuse does not happen in the Norwegian Cup.” Kyvåg himself believes that he is misrepresented.
– Frode Kyvåg makes a number of provocative statements, and I would argue that some of his statements are directly harmful to victims of rape and abuse.
The words belong to Karoline Thorbjørnsen. She is the leader of the Psychiatric organization, which is an association that works voluntarily to promote hope and knowledge related to physical and mental illnesses.

Kyvåg decided to de-drama when he heard that a man had been charged with aggravated rape of a minor at the Norwegian Cup in 2005, a year when Kyvåg was director of the tournament.

– But isn’t one case too much?
– You can’t say that when we talk about more than a million children. It would be incredibly ridiculous to say so. It is the same as saying that there will never be a collision at Ekebergveien during the Norwegian Cup. A traffic accident is too much, you say. I say that it is physically impossible to avoid. Our society is built that way, Kyvåg continued.
Thorbjørnsen just shakes his head at what he reads.
– These statements and the attitude they promote are harmful. There are unknown victims of abuse in Norway, and how do you think they feel when they read this case? Go to? Provocation? Pain? Yes probably. But they probably feel inferior and unimportant too, he thinks.
– Why is it important for you not to leave these statements unquestioned??
– It is important to me for many reasons. One of them is that I want children and youth growing up today to be confident that sharing bad secrets will not be avoided. It is our responsibility as a society to make children and young people feel safe. As a society, we also have a responsibility to speak up when we experience injustices and when we encounter attitudes that we do not want our children and youth to grow up with. It’s important to me because I actively work to create healthy attitudes related to previously unspoken and taboo topics like mental health and abuse, she says.
– Such statements that Kyvåg makes in this case represent in my eyes a lack of knowledge, which clearly affects the attitude it promotes, he adds.

Norwegian Cup boss reacts
Current Norwegian Cup general Pål Trælvik also wants to respond to Kyvåg’s proposal.
He contacted Nettavisen on his own initiative after reading the interview with Kyvåg to state that this is not an opinion they support.
In an email, write:
– Norway Cup believes that any abuse, regardless of whether it is one case in a million or one in ten, is too much. We will have a sport and an event where the individual athlete will be safe, says Trælvik.
On the phone with Nettavisen, he explains why it is important for him not to leave Kyvåg’s statements unquestioned.
Frode is responsible for what he says himself, but what he says may give the impression that the Norwegian Cup does not think it is so dangerous that this has happened, as it happens very rarely. But it is important for me to emphasize that we think this is very serious, it is completely unheard of for something like this to happen in sports, says Trælvik.
– We do not have in any way a feeling of satisfaction that the number of incidents is so low. Once is too much, he adds.
He ensures that the soccer tournament has zero vision when it comes to abuse.
– Our idea is that it should be 100% safe to play sports, including an event like the Norwegian Cup.

Frode Kyvåg received the statements from Trælvik and Thorbjørnsen on Friday.
He first chose to do an interview over the phone, but then he wanted to respond to criticism in writing.

– I deeply regret that Karoline Thorbjørnsen experiences some of my statements, made in Nettavisen several months ago (November 30, editor’s note) regarding abuse in sports, which were published yesterday, as provocative and harmful to rape and victims of abuse. I was miles from my intentions when answering a series of questions regarding the case. What I expressed, that was searched for in the headline and that became a main topic in the report, was how desperate I thought it was to get a case out after 40 years of events with more than a million children as visitors. It is not difficult to say that 95 fatal accidents in Norway last year is 95 for many, but to think that it will be 0 with 2.5 million cars on Norwegian roads is nonsense. It is not difficult to say that one case in the Norwegian Cup is too much, but to think that it cannot happen is completely wrong. The rest of the report says a lot about that and I think it is well written, Kyvåg writes in an email to Nettavisen.
– Karoline Thorbjørnsen should know that the Norwegian Cup has been my life for 39 years and 8 months. A life that has been about children and youth, growth conditions and behavioral development, the most important thing in the entire tournament. In every year, absolutely every year, when asked what I wanted before the tournament started, I replied that all children should have a good experience and go home safely to their parents. I’ve spent an incredible amount of time building a colorful community, a broad value platform, and creating rules for parents. I have traveled Norway for over 30 years and have given over 700 lectures on these topics for sport and volunteering. I have received a number of honors and honors with the King’s Medal of Merit in gold in leading this work, which I have loved doing.
Kyvåg also wants to respond to Trælvik’s proposal:
