National races for the youth class in Russia attract attention.

It is the Inside The Games website that this week could report that an investigation was launched in Russia after 33 athletes withdrew from a national biathlon race.

Twelve girls and 21 men from the youth class who were going to sprint are said to have dropped out of the races after doping inspectors showed up.

The competitions are said to have been held in Tchaikovsky and Izhevsk this Christmas.

Both the Russian Biathlon Federation (RBU) and the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) are taking a closer look at the incident.

CAS penalty cut in half

This comes shortly after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) halved Russia’s exclusion from world sporting events from four to two years.

They have been prohibited from tampering with doping tests.

However, many believe that the Russians have escaped cheaply.

Swedish biathlon profile Sebastian Samuelsson is among those who criticize Russia receiving a lower penalty than they were initially awarded.

Swedish profile responds

When he finds out about the national biathlon race in Russia, he gives up.

Samuelsson tells Swede Aftonbladet that he is “terrified”.

– Especially since we are talking about junior runners. I don’t know where the child abuse line goes. They are dangerous and completely wild things. It is very sad when he reaches that age, Samuelsson tells the Swedish newspaper.

According to Inside The Games, RBU President Viktor Maigourov told Russian news agency TASS that the 33 runners had their own reasons for withdrawing from racing.

It also notes that the athletes were also available for doping tests despite their retirement.

Maigourov believes that poor planning is the main reason the dropout rate was so high, but insists that all doctors were available to conduct a possible drug test.

However, it is claimed that RUSADA is taking a closer look at the case.
