Last Saturday, Borussia Mönchengladbach player Marcus Thuram (23) stole the headlines when he received a red card after spitting in the face of Hoffenheim defender Stefan Posch.
As a result of the action, the disciplinary committee of the German Football Federation (DFB) decided to suspend him for five games. Thuram was also fined 40,000 euros, equivalent to 424,000 Norwegian crowns.
Marcus Thuram is the son of French legend Lilian Thuram. Thuram senior has 142 international appearances for France and has won gold at the World Cup and the European Championship for his home country.
The former Juventus player says he was surprised to see what his son had done.
– That it is great in the media is completely understandable. I saw the game myself and was surprised. I wondered if it really was my son, says Thuram according to Marca.

Thuram further says that he spoke to his son right after the game.
– He was angry and yelling. His saliva wasn’t meant to come out of his mouth. Marcus wants people to know it wasn’t on purpose. You know this shouldn’t happen on a soccer field.
Thuram senior put his shoes on the shelf in 2008, after having a fantastic career at clubs like Juventus and Barcelona, in addition to the French national team.
Disappointed with FIS
The DFB announced on Monday this week that the ban applies to Thuram at all German tournaments. Thuram began serving the suspension when Borussia Mönchengladbach faced Elversberg from level four in the cup on Tuesday.
In addition, he will miss the Bundesliga matches against Arminia Bielefeld, Bayern Munich, Stuttgart and Werder Bremen in January.
