On Thursday morning, the news broke that Lars Lagerbäck had ended as coach of the Norwegian national team. Ståle Solbakken will take office from December 7, 2020.

Lagerbäck: – A wish from NFF

The online newspaper reproduces the full press release, word for word here:

– After the conversation and the wishes of NFF, Terje Svendsen and Pål Bjerketvedt, the undersigned will step down as coach of the national team. The reason for this is that our contracts basically extend to a possible World Cup final, but NFF now wants a “long term” solution regarding the next World Cup qualification and subsequent Championship qualification. from Europe, Lagerbäck says in the press release.

– It is always sad to leave a team that you have worked with for many years. Especially for our support staff who have contributed in a very good way to our achievements and have shown great loyalty on and off the field. Furthermore, the group of players, with a few exceptions, have shown a professional attitude and have done a great job, says the Swede.

– Thanks to your efforts, after a somewhat uneven start to 2017, we have improved our performance and result during 2018-2019 with just two losses in 20 international matches. This meant, among other things, that we won our group in the Nations League and moved up one level. In addition, we have advanced more than 40 places in the FIFA rankings. Most of the young players have also had a place in the national team during 2018-19 and have shown that in the coming years, the Norwegian team can improve their performance with great certainty.

– Unfortunately, 2020 was not a successful year in terms of results and performance. We lost the first of two decisive play-off games, which meant we missed next year’s European Championship play-offs. We are not “the best when it comes to”. This, in addition to two canceled matches, which due to the pandemic did not give us the opportunity to win the Nations League and advance to a new level. “That’s football sometimes.”

– Finally, I would like to thank the players and support staff for an eventful four years and wish this “young” national team good luck in the upcoming matches.

– We are convinced that you will achieve it, especially with the idea that today there are seven or eight young players, who during 2018-19 have begun to establish themselves in the national team. Nor should we forget the older and more experienced ones, who have been involved since 2017. With this combination of players, I am convinced that he will get good results in the future.

– Finally, remember why you win football matches, concludes Lagerbäck.

Solbakken: – Proud and honored

Ståle Solbakken says it is an honor to have the opportunity with Norway.

– I am proud and honored that I was offered the job as the new director of the national team. For me, this is a good time to take over. Lars Lagerbäck and Per Joar Hansen have done a solid job and have developed a foundation that will be exciting to work on. Over time, the NFF has built a good foundation for the national team and I look forward to taking on the task of building a strong team. We will use the time well, because March is fast approaching, says Ståle Solbakken, incoming manager of the A-men national team.

This is not the first time that Solbakken has been hired as manager of the Norwegian national team. He was also hired for the job in 2012 but had to resign when he was offered to take over as head coach of the German club Cologne.

– It is first of all very exciting. He seems like a crude guy who is clear in his opinions. I think he suits the national team very well. At the same time, I must also say that I am grateful that Lars has included me, who has done a lot of good for the national team, writes Leo Østigård in a text message to Nettavisen.

The midfielder has previously studied how Solbakken defensively structured FC Copenhagen.

– I have seen some clips of how Copenhagen defended itself, and there are many good details that I am sure you will be interested in. At the same time, I know that he has also played a lot 4-4-2. Lots of energy, I’m sure it will be! concludes.
