In a Manchester United press release, Edinson Cavani explains the Instagram post for which he is being investigated. The 33-year-old man apologizes.
– The message I posted after Sunday’s game was intended to be a warm greeting to a friend who congratulated me on the game. The last thing he wanted to do was offend someone. I am completely against racism and removed the post as soon as I realized that it could be interpreted that way. I want to apologize for this, says Edinson Cavani, via a Manchester United press release on Monday afternoon.
Sunday was a day full of contrasts for Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani. He first became the great hero with two goals and one goal pass when Manchester United turned the 0-2 into a 3-2 win against Southampton:
A few hours later, it emerged that the English Football Association (FA) wanted to investigate a post Cavani posted through the Instagram social network story feature, where several perceived his post as racist.
“Thank you black,” Cavani wrote on Instagram. Now apologize
It remains to be seen if Cavani will be punished. The English Football Association has not spoken since they asked Cavani and Manchester United for an explanation on Sunday.

According to the new guidelines of the English Football Association on rules for racist statements and actions, it is punishable by a ban of six to twelve games. Racism on social media, on the other hand, may receive a lighter punishment. According to English newspapers, Cavani may be expelled from three games as a result of Sunday’s posting on his Instagram profile.
In a statement, Manchester United said:
– It is clear to us that there was no harm to Edinson’s message, but he still deleted it as soon as he was informed that it could be perceived as incorrect. Edinson has apologized if he has inadvertently offended someone. Manchester United and all of our players are dedicated to fighting racism.

Cavani’s compatriot Luis Suárez was punished for racism while playing in the Premier League in 2011. According to the FA report, the then-Liverpool forward used the word “black” on Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. Suarez was suspended for eight games. He defended himself with cultural differences, that the expression was slang for “friend” in his country of origin.
There are several cases of social media posts that have led to exclusion. Last year, Bernardo Silva was suspended from a game after posting a photo of a character used in advertising for a chocolate brand. The Portuguese compared the figure with his partner Benjamin Mendy, who was perceived as racist by the football association.
On Wednesday Cavani and Manchester United will play at home at Old Trafford. Then Cavani’s former employer, PSG, makes the trip to the “Theater of Dreams.”
