The Formula 1 World Cup round in Bahrain on Sunday came to a halt when Frenchman Romain Grosjean crashed in the first round. The car caught fire, but no serious injuries were reported.

The images from the Bahrain Grand Prix were dramatic after the accident, where large flames erupted from the Frenchman’s car. Grosjean was able, however, to walk away on his own two feet, before being transported in an ambulance.
The car broke in two in the accident, which happened already after the first corner.
– It is a miracle that it turned out well, said former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle on the Sky Sports broadcast.

Grosjean’s team, Haas, writes on Twitter that they have heard on the radio that the Frenchman is fine, that he will be examined by medical personnel.

The flames were several meters in the air around the car and the replay shows the car split in two. The Frenchman got out just in time and had to jump over the railing.
– Romain is doing well. I don’t want to make a medical comment, but I had minor burns to my hands and ankles. I want to thank the rescuers who were very quick, says Haas team leader Günther Steiner.
Haas reports on his Twitter profile that the 34-year-old is now heading to the hospital for a closer medical evaluation.

Alan van derr Merwe, who drives the ambulance for the International Motor Sports Federation (FIA), was among the first to arrive at the scene of the accident.
– It was a big surprise. I have never seen so many llamas in my twelve years in the profession. Romain went out alone, which is pretty incredible after such an accident, he said.
