Hackers are said to have taken control of the Premier League club’s computer systems and now sensitive information about Manchester United may be lost.
Last week it emerged that Manchester United had been targeted by hackers. The club confirmed this itself in a press release.
There, United wrote that the attack was discovered on Friday of last week, but that no critical systems had been affected. The club further wrote that it was not aware that personal information had been leaked as a result of the attack.

On Friday, however, the Daily Mail reports that the case appears to be more serious than previously thought. According to the newspaper, the Premier League club is now being blackmailed by hackers, who are demanding a multi-million pound ransom from United. If money is not paid, confidential information can be leaked to the public.
The newspaper assures that it will be a disaster for the club if this happens.
Manchester United should have brought in a team of experts to solve the problem. People from the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) have confirmed that they are assisting United in the case, but the Daily Mail claims that the hackers still have “control” over the situation.

– NCSC has learned of an incident that has affected Manchester United and we are now working with the organization and partners to get an overview of this, it said in a statement from the Center for Homeland Security.
– On the brink of shame
The Daily Mail further writes that computer security at one of the world’s biggest football clubs has been on the verge of shame and that the system has now been infected by a virus. If United does not pay the ransom, the club is in danger of making inside information available to everyone. This is information about both the club and the players.

It is not known who is behind the hacking and how much money they are demanding, but according to the NCSC, the hackers demanded around £ 5 million as a result of a similar attack on another English football club last year. The maximum that has been paid as a result of such an attack is 4 million pounds.
As a result of the attack, United could also risk being fined by British authorities if information about followers, such as addresses, phone numbers and credit card information, is found to have been stolen in the attack.
Message to fans
Such a fine could end up costing the club £ 9 million, £ 18 million, or two percent of the club’s total income, depending on how severe it is.
However, Manchester United came out on Thursday night to assure fans that this was not the case and that fan data was still safe.

United writes the following in a press release about the case:
– As a result of a cyber attack on the club, our IT team and outside experts are now working to protect our networks and investigate the circumstances. The attack has been disturbing, but we do not know that follower data was stolen.
– The critical systems necessary for matches to be played at Old Trafford are still intact and matches will be played normally. The club does not want to comment on speculation about who may be behind the attack, United writes.
