Champions League, Soccer | Liverpool raged against Atalanta

Liverpool fought hard to create scoring chances and smoked a surprising loss at home to Atalanta.

LIVERPOOL – ATALANTA 0-2:

Liverpool could secure promotion to the Champions League quarter-finals with a win over Atalanta on Wednesday.

Instead, Jürgen Klopp’s lads suffered a surprising 0-2 defeat, and now Group D is open before the final two rounds.

Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens scored the goal for Gian Piero Gasperini’s team at Anfield.

Klopp: – My biggest outrage.

It was an honest Liverpool manager, Jürgen Klopp, who was spoken to in an interview broadcast by Viasat after the match.

– It was a deserved loss. We have to admit it and we have no problem with it. The group is still open and has been all along. There will be tough games so we have to loosen up and move on, Klopp said.

– I’m not angry or anything like that. I’m ready, because in the 60s and a few hours we will have to play again and that’s it. We have to accept that and then we have to make sure that we are there in a different way, Klopp continued.

– Is this your most difficult challenge?

– Yes. I am 53 years old and the whole situation in the world today is the greatest challenge I have ever faced.

Tam first round

It was a much sharper Atalanta who faced Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday, compared to the 0-5 game in Bergamo earlier this fall.

The Italians suffered several misses in the Liverpool half in the first half and also had a useful opportunity to take the lead after nine minutes of play.

At that, Robin Gosens was scored for a hat trick! However, Alisson Becker made a spectacular stop.

A lot of time passed between Liverpool’s big chances in the first half, but just before the break, Mohamed Salah was dangerous up front. The Egyptian attempted a shot with his right leg after the ball was cleared from a corner kick, but the ball went over the goal.

It was Liverpool’s only finish in the first 45 minutes – Liverpool have had so few first-half shot attempts since the Premier League meeting with Chelsea in 2017.

Two rapids of Atalanta

After an hour of play, Atalanta went ahead, after Papu Gómez threw a post into the area. Josip Ilicic ran free at the back post and slid at 0-1 with his right leg.

By then, Diogo Jota, Andy Robertson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino were already on the sidelines. The quartet thus entered the field with Atalanta leading the way, while Divock Origi, Gini Wijnaldum, Kostas Tsimikas and Mohamed Salah came out.

Fresh legs did not help a docile Liverpool, as Gosens made it 2-0 shortly after Hans Hateboer headed the ball into the German’s legs inside the penalty area.

Liverpool continue to lead Group D, two points ahead of Atalanta and Ajax, who beat Central Jutland 3-1 in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
