Behind the counter, magazine legend Bjørn Sand (92) has sent countless customers rushing past on their way to a subway, tram or bus.

Not everyone may have realized that those behind the counter were sent by the actor in the movie classics “The Man Who Couldn’t Laugh” from 1968 and “Norwegian Building Blocks” from 1972.

“So sad, so sad! A gem of a classic tobacconist with perfect sausage sales served with feeling and style. Thank you for holding out for so long, ”writes a neighbor on social media, according to Nettavisen, after the kiosk that has been in operation continuously since the 1920s now disappears from the capital’s urban landscape.

– I’m glad I don’t have to lay off many employees

The traffic junction at Valkyrie Plass is one of the busiest in Norway. Thus, the kiosk’s strategic location has given a coin that rings at the checkout when the smoke, newspapers, chocolate, and other products from the kiosk have left in the heart of Oslo.

But now the adventure is over. The virus pandemic that plagues the country became the nail in the coffin. With fewer and fewer Norwegians on the streets, sales fell rapidly. In the end, the margins became too small.

– I am very happy that I do not have to lay off many employees. My parents are retired so this only affects me and I will probably cope., Simen Sand tells the newspaper.

Clients Disappear During Corona Pandemic

After parents Bjørn Hjalmar Sand and Unni Elisabeth Bernhoft (87) cleaned the premises last week, son Simen has acted as general manager.

After all, he thinks it’s better to give up now than to witness the parenting business slowly losing ground in a time of crisis for the country.

– It’s not good for any party. It was two months that nobody came, this has gone beyond all industries, says Simen Sand to Nettavisen.

His father, review writer, filmmaker and actor Bjørn Sand, was for many years considered one of the funniest men in Norway.

“A rude and arrogant Norwegian without social antennas”

The kiosk and tobacconist

The “Majoren” kiosk and tobacconist at Valkyrie Plass in Majorstua has been a regular feature of the urban landscape since the 1920s. Now it’s over. (Nettavisen screenshot)

He was especially popular in the role of the prankster and quarrelsome “Stutum.” Here he mocked the behavior of Norwegians in a way that made a lot of people laugh at themselves.

Stutum is a rude and arrogant Norwegian, without social antennas, but with a bucket full of prejudices against dissidents, international solidarity and the liberation of women.

He complains about everything and everyone, he is racist, sexist and opposes all kinds of prohibitions ”, writes Wikipedia about the popular character of Stutum.

Spellemannsprisen and “Fjols til fjells”

Bjørn Sand also won the Spellemann Prize in 1973 in open class together with the profile of NRK Totto Osvold for his crazy stunts on the radio show “Nattata”.

The arena was also a regular feature on NRK legend Haralds Tusberg’s entertainment show “Løs på snippen”.

At the end of the 90’s, Bjørn Sand permanently retired the character Stutum. Meanwhile, he finally took over the operation of the “Major” cigar shop in Majorstua together with his wife Unni Elisabeth Bernhoft. So the legacy continued when his father, the magazine legend Bias Bernhoft, passed away in 1986.

Actress Unni Elisabeth Bernhoft starred in the 1957 classic “Fjols til fjells.”
