The oil giant initially assumed the field’s capacity would be 440,000 barrels per day, but this was increased to 470,000 barrels per day in March.

– For the second time since commissioning, the plant can increase its daily capacity. With high profitability and low CO emissions, the additional production at Johan Sverdrup is very good news, says Jez Averty, Area Operations Manager South for Equinor Development and Production business in Norway.

The increase in production capacity comes after Equinor and its partners tested the plant’s capacity in November to see if a capacity increase is possible.

Phase 2 development of the field is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2022. The announced increase in production capacity means that the field, when completed, can produce around 720,000 barrels of oil per day.

Equinor also emphasizes that it may be relevant to further increase daily production capacity. the field uses water injection to ensure high recovery of reserves and keep production high.

– As a result of the positive results of the capacity test in which we produce more than 500,000 barrels of oil per day, we are now working on solutions to increase the water injection capacity. It may help increase daily production capacity further in mid-2021, says COO Rune Nedregaard in a statement.
