Afghanistan’s interior minister confirms reports of ongoing shootings at Kabul University. Currently, the situation is unclear and there are special forces on the scene. There must have been explosions in the area too.

The case is being updated.

At least 19 people were killed after gunmen stormed Kabul University on Monday morning. This is stated by a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, writes the Reuters news agency on Monday afternoon.

The attackers fired at all the students they saw, a Fathullah Moradi told the news agency. He says that he himself managed to escape through one of the doors of the university.

There have also been reports of more injuries after the attack. According to an anonymous government source, many are injured.

A police source says that at least 15 people must be injured after the attack.

The authorities have not yet officially confirmed the number of deaths or injuries.

It was around 07:30 Norwegian time on Monday that channels first reported shooting in and near the university.

The blast is said to have taken place near the Law School, NTB writes.

The situation is still not clarified at 1:00 p.m., and there are reports that there are still exchanges of gunfire in the area.

On Monday morning, the police tried to save university teachers, students and staff. Now they are also blocking the area, according to security authorities. Images on social media show students fleeing the university campus in panic.

According to sources at Tolo News, the shooting will take place during what will be the opening of a book exhibition at the university, where senior Afghan and Iranian officials will be present.

It is not yet known whether these people had arrived at the University when the incident occurred, NTB reports.

Tolo News further reports that there must have been a total of three perpetrators with firearms who entered the University.

Several students are said to have dropped out of the university shortly after they were informed of reports of shootings.

Monday’s teaching was already underway when the shooting began, a college professor told local television station Ariana. Staff and security personnel helped students recover from the area, according to the professor.

The Taliban say they are not behind the attack, but the extremist Islamist group IS has previously attacked various educational institutions in Afghanistan.

As recently as last week, ISIS claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on an educational institution in Kabul that killed at least 24 people, most of them students.
