Prince Azim Haji Bolkiah, son of the Sultan of Brunei, passed away on Saturday morning, the country’s authorities confirmed to CNN. He was only 38 years old.
The prince was number four in the succession to the sultanate, but perhaps more so for throwing extravagant celebrity parties, with guests including Pamela Anderson, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.
Authorities have not yet confirmed any cause of death, the channel writes.
Hollywood career
In recent years, the prince has developed a career as a film producer in Hollywood and is behind several major films produced in the period from 2014 to 2018.
However, he has experienced opposition from several in the entertainment industry, because his father, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, has gradually introduced sharia law into the Islamic kingdom.
International human rights organizations and the UN have condemned the laws and demanded a total halt. Several Hollywood celebrities have expressed their disgust for the regime and called for a boycott of the Sultan’s hotels.
According to CNN, the prince was buried the same day he died. The monarchy now has a seven-day mourning period for the entire population.
