At a time when the nightlife is struggling, a great place opens up right in the center. The people behind Bread and Circus think it will be too easy to wait until everything is back to normal.

On Saturday, the Brød og Sirkus bar and restaurant opens at Gate 3 in Tordenskiolds, where Mesh previously lived. The restaurant will be one of the largest in Oslo at 1,500 square meters. In comparison, Kulturhuset in Youngstorget is 2000 square meters. Bread and Circus has 60 tables with room for six people at each table.
The new owners describe the place as an “entertainment bar” and want to provide entertainment every day.
General Manager Lars Joachim Hagen believes this is exactly what the people of Oslo need now.
– It has never been more important to present an offer like this. People want a break and we want to give it to them, he says.
The band behind Bread and Circus has experience in the restaurant industry. They own the Los Tacos restaurant chain with seven branches in five cities in Norway. In addition, they own the Outdoors restaurant in St. Hanshaugen.
– We have learned that holding events in restaurants is something that attracts people. That’s why we want a place with entertainment every day, says Hagen.

Opening during a pandemic
– When others close and the offer worsens, we want to open, says Hagen.
Several nightclubs have struggled to stay open after the corona outbreak. For two months this spring, the entire industry was shut down. After the summer, the opening hours have been reduced. Additionally, there are requirements for, among other things, distance, table service, and guest registration.
Hagen thinks it’s too easy a way not to create new nightlife concepts.
– The easiest thing would be to stay idle until Norway fully reopens. But people need entertainment now, he says.
Hagen is pleased to be able to offer jobs at a time when many are out of work. At the same time, he wants to establish a safe social scene during the pandemic.
– The alternative is that people are in less safe places, believes Hagen.

No “entertainment compulsion”
The great room has two stages. Some days there will be two different events on each stage. One of them will always be free.
The daily entertainment varies between traditional contests, bingo and own concepts. An event called “The Nutcracker” will be a cross between a pub quiz and an “escape room”.
There will be no entertainment compulsion. You should also be able to sit in places without being disturbed by entertainment, Hagen says.
