The president’s office writes on Facebook that the Antonov AN-26-type military plane crashed in Chuguev in the Kharkiv region.

Then the plane was in full fire.

– Ambulances took two survivors to the hospital. They have burns on more than 90 percent of the body, according to preliminary information, says Viktor Zabasjtu, director of the Center for Medical Disasters, according to RIA Novosti.

It is not clear if there were actually 27 or 28 people on board. According to the Attorney General, the status is that:

  • 25 people have died.
  • 2 survived. For one of them, the condition is critical.

– The search for others continues, writes the Attorney General in a press release.

Here it happened:

Possible engine problems

The Interior Ministry writes in a press release that the plane crashed around 8:50 p.m., two kilometers from the military airport.

Local authorities had received information about problems on board before the accident. In a press release, they said the pilot reported that the left engine had failed.

– But this is not a critical situation for an experienced pilot. It is unclear what happened after this. The investigation will prove it, says Governor Kutsjer in the press release.

The Attorney General has opened a case under a section of the law that deals with “violation of the rules for flying and preparations for it”.

– During the approach, the plane lost control and crashed near the highway, writes the Attorney General.

Cadets on a training trip

The president’s office writes that, in addition to the crew, there were cadets from the Kharkiv Air Force University on board, that is, students from the Air Force school. And that according to preliminary information it was a training flight.

According to Governor Alexei Kutsjer, 21 of the 28 on board were cadets, the rest of the crew. However, the state emergency service DSNS writes on Telegram that one of the cadets was not allowed to fly and therefore there were 27 people on board.

– We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. We wish the injured a good recovery, writes the presidential office on Facebook.

The president will depart for the crash site on Saturday, according to Interfax.
