Lan Marie Berg (ODM) and Oslo’s red-green city hall are starting work to make parts of Oslo a no-go zone for fossil cars.
In the budget for 2021, the Urban Environment Agency receives NOK 4 million to make a proposal for areas in the city where it is only allowed to drive electric cars, hydrogen cars or vehicles with other emission-free technology.
– The ban on this type of car in some parts of Oslo will make it even more attractive to choose an electric car or another more environmentally friendly means of transport. It will also make less noise and make life easier in the city, Oslo Councilor for Environment and Transport Lan Marie Berg (MDG) tells Dagbladet.
The goal is for emissions in Oslo to be cut by 95 percent by 2030. It has not been clarified in which areas fossil cars will be banned.
– But it will be natural to look at the areas that are currently covered by urban life without cars, says Berg.
The zone for car-free city life is most of Oslo’s city center, from Oslo Central Station to Slottsplassen and the surrounding streets. This zone will eventually also include Tøyen and Greenland.
– The goal is to achieve this by the end of 2023 at the latest. If we do, Oslo will likely be the first capital in the world to have zero-emission zones, says Berg.
