Viktor Hovland (23) was on the verge of a first position in the Major US Open tournament, until he fell in the last three holes.

Hovland delivered world-class games over all four days, including the last, until the 16th hole. At the time, Hovland was in sixth place and only leader Bryson DeChambeau had played better on the final day.

But first came a bogey, before Hovland had to endure a double bogey on the penultimate hole and the problems continued: on the closing hole it looked as if he hit a tree on his second shot where the ball bounces in the wrong direction.

In the end, he had to fight for a double ghost. And then it fell a good distance down the charts after the last three holes finished five over par.

In the first three rounds, he had played these three holes at par on the course (one birdie and one bogey in the second round). Had he done it on the final day as well, Hovland would have finished fourth.

Before his final hole, the Norwegian was still in a sensationally strong sixth place. But by the time he finished his last round he had dropped to 13th place and finished the tournament seven strokes above par.

But still: 13th place is very strong.

– It’s boring that I’m not “top 10” with that ending. But he will learn a lot from this, when he receives disappointment from a distance, says Viasat commentator and former golfer Joakim Mikkelsen after Hovland’s crash at the end.

Bryson DeChambeau won the US Open and crushed the competition on the final day. The American became the only player under par in the final round and finished a total of six strokes under par on the very demanding Winged Foot course. Matthew Wolff was number one, six strokes behind the winner.

Hovland with horror stats on the last day: – Must be hard to swallow

Along the way, on the final day of this year’s US Open, Hovland moved up to shared fourth place after Sunday’s ninth of 18 holes. But the US Open is known to be one of the tournaments that really puts the best golfers in the world to the test. On the demanding field, several great players withdrew in Sunday’s main game and Hovland was also one of the players who finally made it too difficult for them.

At the Tour Championship he was number 20 recently after a bad finish, and at the US Open he had to endure another decline in the finals.

– He was about to win around four million crowns with sixth place. It costs him about 2 million NOK to finish there. There will be some costly mistakes along the way, Mikkelsen says in the Viasat broadcast as the best players made up for the win.

But Hovland fought well along the way. After having to endure a bogey on the 11th hole, he fell to sixth place. But then he returned the direct hit with a birdie on the 12th hole and then took sixth place alone. And Hovland remained one of the few players to deliver on par on the final day. Before it raked.

P.S! Viktor Hovland finished 12th at the US Open last year. He was still an amateur then.
