Magnus Carlsen (29) managed only a draw against chess legend and master Garry Kasparov (57) when they met on Friday night for the first time in 16 years.

It happened after a drama in which Carlsen put his index finger to his temple in desperation for a mega mistake that caused him to spoil a huge advantage. Kasparov, on the other hand, was able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Carlsen, 13, led a confused world champion to a draw in a quick chess tournament in Iceland in 2004. The Norwegian showed up in earnest at that game. So Kasparov won the second game they played at that time.

Since then, they have never met in an official tournament until now. 16 years later, they met again on Friday night, albeit not physically, as a result of the crown, but cyberspace isn’t a bad place to play either.

Carlsen hired Kasparov as his personal trainer in his day, but the collaboration was short-lived.

Although it was Fischer chess, the starting position, which was drawn among the 960 possible variants, was quite similar to a normal chess lineup:

Magnus Carlsen had black pieces, but got a small advantage relatively early.

– I don’t like the white position, said Maurice Ashley in the official broadcast. Plus, Carlsen had a clear time advantage.

The supercomputer session finally gave Carlsen a huge advantage.

– I feel like Garry has beaten himself in this game, Yasser Seirawan said in the broadcast, and he thought that Kasparov had made a mistake first of all, more than Carlsen had played so well.

But then the Norwegian made a mega mistake on move 31 and lost all the lead. Concerned for himself, Carlsen put his index finger to his temple. He made a new boom on move 42.

The Norwegian was clearly upset that he had ruined the victory.

Garry Kasparov was on the chess throne for 20 years, from 1985 to 2005. Carlsen has dominated the last ten years.

The Russian joked beforehand on Twitter that he would sue young players for abusing the elderly if they didn’t do it right. And just before the party started, he tweeted:

Both Carlsen and Kasparov won their first game on Friday night: the Norwegian against the French Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Kasparov against the great talent Alireza Firouzja, both with black pieces.

– Considering the age difference of 40 years, I did well, Kasparov thought afterwards.
