A man in his 40s died Thursday night in hospital after an electric scooter accident in Troms earlier this week.

Police were notified of the accident at 02.18 on Tuesday night. It happened on a walking and cycling trail in Finnfjordbotn in Senja municipality. It was Folkebladet who first reported the fatal accident.

– It was the passersby who found the accident unconscious next to the electric scooter. They then reported the police and ambulance, Investigation Chief Ruben Pedersen at the Finnsnes sheriff’s office tells VG.

He says that shortly thereafter the man was taken to UNN in Tromsø by ambulance helicopter. The man has been unconscious in the hospital until he passed away last night.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident.

– The police have carried out on-the-spot investigations together with the accident group of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. The electric scooter has been turned over to the accident group, who have been asked to examine it very carefully, says Pedersen.

– We want to clarify the technical condition of the bike, he says.

A single accident

So far, the police know little about the course of events. They have asked witnesses to come forward, but so far no one has contacted them.

– We are still looking for witnesses, but it was dark and it happened at night. This area where this happened is not exactly very busy either, so it is only natural that no one has checked in. But if there are any, we ask that they stay in touch, says Pedersen.

The investigation so far indicates that it is a single accident.

– That is what most indicates so far. But then there comes a time when the police have to think of other hypotheses, so it is investigated extensively, says the head of investigation.

Being autopsy

Pedersen claims that a forensic autopsy will be requested on the deceased. At the same time, the police await a response from the accident group.

– An accident group report will be drawn up, but we hope this will take some time, says Pedersen.

He currently does not have an estimate of how long it will be.
