More than half a million people in Oregon have evacuated their homes after massive fires. On Thursday, some had to return to their burned houses to see the destruction.
– I’ve never seen so much destruction before. “I don’t know how to get over something like this,” Jerry Walker told the Associated Press.
Alone in his pajamas, he had to evacuate his home in the city of Phoenix on short notice. The only thing she had time for was to bring some money. She still doesn’t know how the apartment complex she lived in went.
Washington and California are also affected by strong fires.
In Washington state, a one-year-old boy lost his life earlier this week, while four people have been confirmed dead in Oregon. Gov. Kate Brown said during a news conference Thursday that authorities believe an unknown number of people have lost their lives, writes local newspaper The Oregonian.

Melted car tires
Several of those who were evacuated in Phoenix were taken to large parking lots to spend the night in their cars. After a night of uncertainty and fear for what awaited them, they returned home with bags to collect what would survive the massive fires.
Jonathan Weir also had to evacuate from Phoenix. Describes flames up to thirty feet above the ground. He was driving away when the fires approached and his car’s tires began to melt at the entrance to a parking lot.
His home, as well as several of the roughly 4,000 houses in the city, did not survive the fires.
– There were flames on the other side of the street, there were flames on my right and flames on my left. “I watched everything burn,” Weir told a reporter, according to the AP.

About 600 houses burned
FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is the United States Department of Disasters. They are responsible for dealing with disasters and helping to help rebuild after the disasters that many Americans are now experiencing.
They report to the AP that some 600 houses have been burned by the blaze that started in Ashland and spread to Phoenix.
The Oregon Governor says more than 3.6 square kilometers have been affected by fires in the past three days. She says the death toll is not certain.
