– With the agreements we are writing now, it is an average of two to three hundred million doses for the EU, Richard Bergström told NRK Debatten on Thursday night.
He is the vaccine coordinator for Sweden and negotiates the purchase of coronary vaccines on behalf of the entire EU. Norway, Switzerland and Iceland can also participate in the trade, even if the countries are not members of the EU.
– Norway can buy one percent of the entire EU quota. Sweden can buy two percent. Sweden manages the actual resale to Norway, but it is the entire EU that shows solidarity with Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, Bergström explains.
If vaccines that Sweden has already signed under an agreement are approved, it is possible that, on average, Norway will receive two to three million doses of vaccine.
According to Bergström, “he has enough shots” if he receives three million doses.
You can get many more vaccines
– The first vaccines, if they work and are approved, we hope to start vaccinating next year. Maybe since January, but at least in the first quarter. There are several vaccines coming at the same time, Bergström says.
According to the Swedish vaccine coordinator, some of the vaccines come in a single dose. Some are not ready until the end of next year. The trade is also dependent on the vaccines being truly safe and approved for use.
– Right now we have written an agreement. We will sign another six agreements in the coming weeks. We are in final negotiations, says Richard Bergström.
If Sweden achieves all seven agreements, it could mean that the EU will have access to more than 1.5 billion doses of coronary vaccine in 2021.
– But it assumes that everyone works, is safe, approved, and we do not know that, emphasizes Bergström.
According to the vaccine coordinator, that is why it is very important not only to bet on a card, but to make letters of intent with several companies.
Estimated price 100-150 crowns
According to the vaccine coordinator, the pharmaceutical companies that sell them have different strategies. Some people work ideally and just want to pay for the costs they have incurred to make the vaccine.
– Then the price is less than one hundred crowns per patient. It is interesting. Then there are other vaccines that are being developed by more commercial companies, who want more payments, Bergström says.
He says that in the agreements in which they have managed to negotiate the price, Bergström estimates that the average price per person vaccinated can be between 100 and 150 NOK.
– Actually, it is nothing compared to what we pay for testing and costs in society otherwise.
Who gets the vaccine first?
Health Minister Bent Høie (H) says health authorities are now working on making a plan about who will get the vaccine only when it arrives in Norway.
– It is natural to believe that people who are in the risk group and those who work in the health service will receive the vaccine first, says Høie.
He commended Sweden’s work with the vaccine negotiations.
Researchers around the world are working to find a vaccine against the coronavirus. There are at least 120 different research projects underway.
Additionally, new and old drugs are being investigated to find an effective treatment for covid-19 disease.
So far, more than 28 million cases of infection have been confirmed worldwide and more than 900,000 people have died.
