A fire has broken out in the Beirut port area, just over a month after the fatal explosion and subsequent fires that killed at least 190 people.
Large clouds of smoke hover over the Beirut port area after a fire broke out in the Lebanese capital at 12 o’clock on Thursday afternoon.
It’s been just over a month since an explosion in Beirut killed at least 190 people and left some 300,000 of the city’s residents homeless.
The Lebanese army has tweeted that the cause of Thursday’s fire is that a warehouse caught fire with tires and oil.
“It exploded in a warehouse with oils and tires on the duty-free market in the port of Beirut. Firefighting operations have started and helicopters will participate,” they write in their twitter account.
Panic
The leader of the Lebanese Red Cross says there is no danger of explosions after the fire. According to him, there are no injuries, but there are cases of people who have had difficulty breathing, Reuters reports.
– People are panicking now. Panic about the size of the fire, the fear that it is out of control and that it could lead to something worse. This is the second fire in just a few days, journalist Kareem Chehayeb in Beirut tells VG.
Chehayeb says many photos and videos of the fire and thick blankets of smoke now circulate on social media.
The army in Lebanon encourages people to stay a good distance from the affected area, writes The Daily Star.
