Chinese and Russian forces participate in a military exercise in the Caucasus.

The exercise has been dubbed Caucasus 2020 and also includes forces from, among others, Armenia, Iran, Myanmar and Pakistan.

Countries will focus on tactive defense operations, encirclement maneuvers, and command and control routines on the battlefield, reports the Ministry of Defense in Beijing.

– Exercise has a special meaning

A large number of light vehicles will be transported to the training area by the latest generation of Chinese transport aircraft.

The exercise has special significance for Sino-Russian relations at a time when the entire world is battling the pandemic, a ministry statement said.

China has not registered any new cases of corona infection in several weeks, while Russia is constantly receiving new cases and has more than a million infected.

Russia and Belarus have also announced a military exercise scheduled to take place in Belarus starting Thursday, in parallel with ongoing protests against President Alexander Lukashenko.

Serbia declined after EU pressure

Serbia should have participated in this exercise too.

But Serbian authorities said on Wednesday that they have so far suspended all participation in foreign military exercises under pressure from the EU.

According to the plan, 1,500 soldiers will participate in the exercise near the Belarusian city of Brest.
