Drop Charge Against Petter Northug for Driving Under the Influence

[ad_1]

WHEN the police are now dropping the charge against Petter Northug for driving under the influence, this looks more and more like the sad story that everyone has gone too fast:

  • Petter was also convicted too quickly.

After he himself recounted how he was stopped by the police for reckless driving outside of Oslo, it was only a few hours before the Swedish Expressen delivered a solid verdict:

I’m sure about one thing; It is never a shame for a person to endanger the lives of others by driving with cocaine on their body.the newspaper commentator wrote, mercilessly adding:

So he’s not a good boy.

It’s a verdict you probably want not written today after Petter’s blood test showed that he no he was under the influence of cocaine.

But what about all the other convictions?

HE It was quite violent in the days after the news broke, and overshadowed the most important thing in this still sad case. That we are able to distinguish between ugly actions and the people who perform them. That human dignity is the same even after drug abuse and reckless driving.

Cowardly done to Petter

Cowardly done to Petter

Yes; just as strong, even if the police had obtained a blood test that showed Petter was actually intoxicated.

HE It didn’t, but various media outlets wrote it anyway:

The facts of the case are not something to discuss. Petter Northug has screwed up again. I drove in an intoxicated carThe Nettavisen commentator concluded when he discussed in print whether there was any reason to forgive the ski king.

If I had been younger, this would have been sadder. Now he can only cry like Johaug, without it helping, said Peggy Brønn clearly not understanding the professional website Kampanje.

Oddly enough; Peggy Brønn is Professor of Communication and Culture at BI Norwegian Business School.

Not in culture.

UP Over the years, there has been a lot of culture around Petter Northug. This case should form the basis for self-criticism in various outlets of how thoughtless commentators and journalists have joined the cheer squad that diverted Petter’s own development.

At least he chose to surround himself with a court of people who did, and it cost him dearly. The story of the fall of Northug is also the story of a totally failed privatization of the best Norwegian sports. That prospect disappeared from all the cheers from Norway’s loudest media.

ME maybe we should check if we have lost our humanity. It’s easy to crowd around a falling idol. Jatte throughout the sentence. As if we’ve never driven too fast ourselves, or gotten drunk.

This agreement with the sins of Petter Northug was at least more than moralistic.

And then not believe.

NOW is the point regardless of whether it is possible to return. Who realizes how lucky he was when the police stopped him and pressured him to take an open position against all of his own lies. Let him no longer fool himself. In other words, the very basis for good everyday life even without intoxication.

In practical terms, it can be helpful if the police have dropped the serious suspicion of driving under the influence. Seen from the outside, Petter needs a strict training environment and a strict training regimen on the way back. With a possible shorter sentence, it becomes easier.

HAD If the ski season had been normal, it would have been natural to train with the cross-country skiers towards Vasaloppet in March. The virus pandemic also makes the mass gathering very uncertain, but the opportunity to exercise is at least there.

Petter Northug has grown back in Sweden before. The adventure of the World Cup in Falun 2015 changed his life, but not more than that, we have to stop mixing driving under the influence with medals.

Petter was not forgiven for driving while intoxicated because he won all the World Cup medals in Falun. Those events do not go hand in hand.

But neither does the relentless condemnation of a man trying to get up.
