At least ten people have been killed after a twelve-hour shooting, according to Canadian police. One of those killed is a police officer.

The 51-year-old perpetrator began his killing in the small community of Portapique, in the province of Nova Scotia, on Saturday night local time, writes Canadian CBC.

On Sunday morning, police began searching for him along one of the province’s busiest highways. At 11:40 am Sunday morning, local time had ended, at a police station north of Halifax in Enfield.

At least ten people were killed, police confirmed at a press conference on Sunday night, Norwegian time.

“We believe that one person is responsible for all of the murders, and that he alone moved throughout the northern part of the province where he committed what appears to be multiple murders,” Chris Leather told police at the press conference.

One police officer is among those killed: his mother of two children, Heidi Stevenson. She is described as a veteran of the police force, of which she has been a member for 23 years.

The author, whom the police call Gabriel Wortman, was also confirmed dead, Reuters writes. It is unclear if he was shot by the police.
