Microsoft announced record Xbox Live numbers this week, with nearly 90 million users in the last quarter. At the same time, the Xbox Game Pass service has reached ten million subscribers, the company says.
Looking for contact through the game
It was during Microsoft’s last quarterly report that the company released the new figures. Overall, game revenue fell 1 percent compared to the same period last year, but with higher revenue from Xbox content and service sales, the company is still better than expected.
In a conference call with investors, Microsoft pointed to the current crown pandemic and the measures that force people to stay home, the biggest cause of the numbers.
– People around the world turn to games to connect with other people while practicing social distance. We continue to deliver exclusive new content to attract and retain players.
Additionally, the Project xCloud streaming service should have reached “hundreds of thousands” of users in the seven countries where the service is currently available. Eight other countries will test xCloud in the near future, including Norway.
– Difficult situation
As Microsoft and Xbox numbers go up and down, Phil Spencer is careful to cheer up too much. In an interview with Business Insider, the Xbox boss acknowledges that the company is in a difficult situation where they are seeing an increase just because the world is struggling.
– We want to think carefully and make sure not to exploit the situation maliciously. We have not adopted any other commercial strategy or such. We just try to keep all of our services running, we try to make sure the games are enjoyable, make sure our networks are secure, and that we are there when people need us. I am proud to be able to offer this activity to people, said Spencer.
