Friday is May 1st and therefore it is also a holiday for most of us.
With the cabin ban behind us, there certainly are many who want to make up for lost days in the mountains and perhaps make this long weekend the end of the winter season.
Are you going to the mountains the weekend of May 1? Then you might definitely have winter tires on the car.
Spring has come to southern Norway, but as soon as spring, winter can quickly return. The Meteorological Institute has sent hazard alerts in Agder, Telemark, Buskerud, Oppland and Hedmark.
It can snow a lot
– If you have switched to summer tires and are going up a bit, you simply need to reuse winter tires, says Nils Sødal, NAF’s chief communications advisor.
The weather forecast says that in places more than 400 meters above sea level, between 5 and 15 centimeters of snow can fall during Thursday night and night through Friday.
– It means challenging driving conditions, and summer tires are not what you should have in the car at the time. If you are going to gain altitude, it is important that you take it easy. Even with winter tires, there can be smooth roads with fresh snow and annular warns Sødal, in a press release.

Many were deferred
From experience, many people switch to summer tires when the Easter holidays are over. In southern Norway, this year’s winter has been mild and snowy. This, combined with the fact that a few were allowed to go into the mountains at Easter, caused many people to change wheels unusually earlier this year.
The deadline to remove spiked winter tires is this year, May 1, for the entire country. Overall, southern Norway has an earlier deadline for this than northern Norway, but due to all the challenges surrounding the crown pandemic, this year it was postponed for everyone in the south.
So the rule basically states that studded tires must be May 1, whether you’re going to the mountains or not. But this is not the calendar that applies, the rule is that it must be closed according to the conditions. And if there is a danger of slippery roads everywhere you go, you can safely use studded tires even if it is a few days past the deadline.
For studded winter tires, there is no specific deadline either. You can drive them all year round initially, but it is highly recommended that you change your summer tires as soon as winter is over. Winter tires have a much smoother tire mix than summer tires, so they also have significantly poorer properties in hot weather.
