The coronavirus, covid-19 | New study: Remdesivir has no effect on coronavirus

The drug experts who believed most in fighting the coronavirus had no effect in the first study.

Remdesivir was developed to fight the Ebola virus and is a broad-spectrum antiviral medication. Antiviral drugs do not cure a viral disease but slow it down.

Several experts have previously expressed the hope that this drug may help fight coronavirus. The deputy director of the World Health Organization, Bruce Alyward, said:

– There is only one drug that we believe can have real effects, and that is Remdesivir.

I had to resign early

However, in a new study published in the Lancet journal, the drug had no effect, and the study had to be canceled early in several of the patients due to side effects.

The study was conducted in Hubei, China between February 6 and March 12, 2020. There were 237 patients included in the study, 158 received Remdisivir and 79 received a placebo. There was no difference in recovery time, that is, recovery time, between patients, and just under 14 percent of those who received the drug died, compared to almost 13 percent of those who received placebo.

Remdesivir was discontinued early in 18 of the 158 patients due to adverse events, and the use of placebo was discontinued in 4 in the control group for the same reason. However, the study does not reveal the side effects that led to the completion of the study.

Of the patients in the study, 89 men and 69 women received Remdesivir, and 51 men and 27 women received placebo. The average age was 65, and several had underlying diseases. There were a few more people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease in the group who received Remdesivir than those who received placebo.

Posted and removed from WHO web pages

According to an article published in The Guardian, the study was published on the WHO pages as early as last week, but has since been removed from the website. Spokesman Tarik Jasarevic due to this had accidentally got on too early.

– The WHO authors submitted a draft of the document and then inadvertently published it on the website. The document was deleted as soon as the error was detected and is now being reviewed. We await a final version before commenting, Jasarevic told the newspaper.

Positive results

It is the pharmaceutical giant Gilead that produces Remdesivir, and they have previously reported that a large-scale trial of the drug has produced positive results.

United States ‘top infection control expert Anthony Fauci pointed to the United States’ trial on Wednesday.

– Remdesivir has an obvious, significant and positive effect in reducing the course of the disease. This shows that Remdesivir can block the virus, Fauci said, according to NTB.

He thinks that the Chinese study is not satisfactory enough.

Remdesivir is also being tested in Norway, as part of a WHO study.

Experimental medicine

Infectious physician and associate professor at the University of Bergen, Bjørn Blomberg, previously informed Nettavisen that Remdesivir is an experimental medicine that is not approved for routine treatment of some diseases as of today.

– Remdesivir is probably still the drug that most people believe in because laboratory and animal studies have shown the effect of Remdesivir against SARS and MERS, the two known coronaviruses that have caused serious illness in the past, and that the drug has been found to have relatively small side effects, Blomberg said.

He further stated that the drug has been given top priority for drugs to be investigated in WHO covid-19 treatment studies, and that the combination of readily available HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir is established as a second priority.
