RICHMOND, Va. – High school soccer will not be played in Virginia this fall due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Virginia High School League (VHSL).
The organization says they will decide the fate of the 2020 fall sports season on July 27. Soccer in the fall is not included in any of the three models under consideration.
- Model 1: Only golf and cross country in the fall. All other fall sports canceled.
- Model 2: Spring sports (except lacrosse) shift to fall and vice versa
- Model 3: All sports played in truncated seasons from December 14 to June 26.
- Model 3: Winter sports will take place from December 14 to February 14. 20 (First game date: 12/28). Fall Sports will run from February 15 to May 1 (first game date: 3/1); Spring Sports will run from April 12 to June 26 (first game date: April 26).
It is not known if soccer will be considered for the winter and spring months.
Chad Hornik, head coach of Deep Run High School, reacted to Wednesday’s announcement in a statement to CBS 6.
“My heart is heavy for our Deep Run soccer players and coaches. We have been working incredibly hard long before COVID-19 hit our world and now our seniors may be missing out on playing their senior season,” said Hornik. . “We have more than a dozen players who are counting on the 2020 season to make their final impressions of the college recruiters and now this opportunity may be gone.”
He says he remains optimistic that fall sports will somehow happen for his team and for all fall athletes across the country.
