NJ coronavirus update: Seton Hall basketball is barred from moving from Big East to a conference-only schedule … for now

UPDATE (11:28 am): The Big East officially announced that it is moving to a conference-only schedule for fall sports. Basketball schedule remains “unaffected at this time.”

No decision is being made at this time regarding the BIG EAST Fall Sports Conference competition and championships. In the coming weeks, BIG EAST will continue to monitor COVID-19 conditions across the country and in BIG EAST communities and will provide further updates on dates and formats, as appropriate. All decisions related to the Fall Conference competition will continue to be guided primarily by the health and safety of the BIG EAST campuses and its athletic program participants and will be made in accordance with NCAA actions and policies. The sports affected are: men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball and field hockey. BIG EAST’s plans for the 2020-21 winter and spring sports seasons are not affected at this time.

The Greater East is following the leader and moving to a conference-only schedule this fall due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, Seton Hall’s basketball program will not be affected by the planned change.

Last week, Big Ten and Pac-12 announced their intentions to move to conference-only hours amid the COVID-19 crisis. ACC, SEC and Big 12 are expected to decide at the end of the month whether to follow suit.

The Patriot League and Ivy League have taken the coronavirus pandemic one step further, canceling all fall sports.
