ALTON – Two Alton firefighters have fully recovered from the coronavirus as seven continue to recover, according to city officials.
On Friday, city officials reported that nine members of the 46 sworn firefighters tested positive for COVID-19. Many other firefighters, they said, have been quarantined as a result of the virus.
Alton deputy fire chief Brad Sweetman said he has spoken to all firefighters on a daily basis and that those recovering from the virus continue to improve.
“I would hope that each of them can return to their full service soon,” he said. Currently seven firefighters are actively fighting the virus and two are quarantined as a precaution.
“I am encouraged by the recovery of the two firefighters and the continuous improvement of the other seven,” said Alton Mayor Brant Walker, “but I have to urge the public to remain vigilant in their personal safety measures.”
In a statement, city officials said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to encourage the public to take safety precautions, which include frequent hand washing, staying at least six feet away from people. Outside your home, cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face. cover yourself when you are around others, cover yourself by coughing and sneezing, clean and disinfect and monitor your health daily
