NFL-NFLPA talks proceed “as expected” with little progress

The NFL continues to be a deadline-driven business, and without an immediate deadline to reach agreement on the various issues that persist between the league and the NFL Players Association over COVID-19 rules, the two sides. They reached no agreement during a negotiating session on Monday.

According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, they proceeded “as expected” without “really” any news from the talks.

NFLPA Executive Committee member and 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman shared this message on Twitter: “Good meeting with management today. We were frank and honest with them, we will not compromise the health of our players in these discussions. “

Again, the league is under no obligation to agree to anything in regards to protocols for professional football in a pandemic. The league can implement rules, and players can challenge the overall safety of the workplace through an injury-free complaint filed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

For now, the league is refraining from playing hardball, presumably because it wants players to buy in fully and completely. If players disagree with the procedures, perhaps they become less diligent in avoiding the virus and perhaps secretly support each other. the kind of outbreak that would shut down football without players doing something they won’t do: launch a wildcat strike.

However, at some point decisions will have to be made. The league’s patience and cooperation, therefore, will not be unlimited. Eventually a stalemate will be declared and the rules will be implemented, if an agreement cannot be reached.
