One person died in an accident on South Eyre Rd, near Swannanoa in North Canterbury, on Monday.

A teenage girl died on her way home from school after crashing into a power pole in North Canterbury.

A police spokesman said officers were alerted to the single vehicle crash on South Eyre Rd in Swannanoa, Waimakariri, around 3.30pm on Monday.

The driver crashed into a power pole and died at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle.

Things understands that the driver, who is a teenager, was heading home from school when it appears she crossed the center line and hit the pole.

It is understood that the teenager was not far from home when the accident occurred.

The road was not closed at night and there were detours instead.

The single-vehicle accident happened on South Eyre Rd in Swannanoa around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

Meanwhile, an Otago driver suffered serious injuries after crashing on Owaka Valley Rd, southwest of Balclutha, around 2 p.m. Monday.

The injured driver was taken to hospital in serious condition, a police spokesman said.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident.
