Young mother worries her life will be shortened after ACC refuses to fund surgery

Field asked ACC to fund the intestinal surgery, which they turned down Thursday, saying the need for the surgery was not primarily due to his nerve injury.

That’s despite a letter from a doctor telling ACC that it was a consequence of the nerve injuries.

Field and her husband felt nothing but disappointment.

A surgery scheduled for next Wednesday was canceled, prompting Field to start a Give a Little Page page.

The cancellation also brought in National’s Wairarapa candidate, Mike Butterick.

“They just got lost in the system,” says Butterick.

But on Friday afternoon ACC made a 180 degree turn and agreed to fund it.

ACC said it received new medical information on Wednesday that it was too late to take into account yesterday’s decision.

After evaluating the information, they decided to finance the surgery.

However, Field says it’s not the surgery he wants, a colostomy. ACC insists on funding the surgery you initially requested.

Field just wants to be there for his family: “I want to be around to see my children grow old.”

Those chances look better tonight, though he’s still in pain and faces another delay before anything is done about it.
