Queen Elizabeth II has spoken of light and hope during a powerful Christmas Day address to the Commonwealth.

His Majesty delivered the annual address from Buckingham Palace, taking the opportunity to address the masses who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic this year.
“Every year, we announce the arrival of Christmas by turning on the lights and the light does more than create a festive atmosphere: the light brings hope,” said the Queen.
The Queen acknowledged that people of all faiths were unable to celebrate their religious holidays this year in the usual way due to restrictions currently in place in the UK, but added, “we need life to continue.”
“Surprisingly, in a year that has necessarily kept people apart, in many ways it has brought us closer together.”
She said she and her family were inspired by those who helped out in the community and faced the challenges of 2020, and said she was proud and touched by the “indomitable spirit” displayed.
His Majesty then paid tribute in particular to the health workers on the front lines who provide hope.
To end her speech, the Queen acknowledged that some would feel sadness while mourning the loss of a loved one or simply wanting to see their friends.
“All they really want for Christmas is a simple hug or a handshake,” he said.
“If you are among them, you are not alone and let me assure you of my thoughts and prayers.
“Let the light of Christmas, the spirit of self-denial, love and, above all, hope, guide us in the times to come.”
