A 55-year-old woman has been mutilated by a dog, believed to be a crossbreed, at Cronulla Mall in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire.
Witnesses say the woman was trying to protect her own pet when she was bitten by the off-leash dog, and her screams were “absolutely creepy.”
A NSW Ambulance spokesperson told NCA NewsWire that paramedics were called shortly before noon and that two teams of ambulances rushed to the scene.
“Paramedics treated a 55-year-old woman for serious hand injuries and transferred her to Sydney Hospital,” he said.
The hospital, about 30 km by car from where the attack took place, has a specialized manual unit.
A witness told NCA NewsWire that the dog had initially attacked the woman’s dog and that she was “screaming and trying to save him” before being attacked.
“People were coming from everywhere, so I didn’t see much else until someone came out with their little dog covered in blood,” said the local woman.
“So (I) saw the owner with the (staff) now on a leash when someone was buying one at the Dollar Stretchers store.
“Then I saw the woman who was attacked. Her hand was really shattered.
“There were lots of blood and some misshapen fingers … I don’t know if they can save them all.
The woman’s dog was “covered in blood” and was taken to a local vet.
