A woman has revealed that she was forced to leave her gym mid-workout after being accused of “exposing three inches of her waist.”
Julia Maren, from Tennessee, USA, was exercising in a short black bra and khaki leggings, showing about 7.5 cm of her midsection, when she said she was approached and told that she would “have to get out gym “if she didn’t put on a shirt.
The mother said “no explanation was given” as to why, pointing to the behavior as proof that “double standards and sexism still exist.”
“Today they told me that I would have to leave the gym if I did not put on a shirt without any explanation. My training was interrupted and they told me to take off my headphones so that someone could tell me they could ‘get me a shirt if I need one’ I wanted to continue my training I had to wear one, “wrote Julia on Instagram.
“WHAT ?! So you’re telling me that because three inches of my waist is exposed, I’m not welcome in the gym,” he continued, adding that men who wear “cropped” bodybuilding tanks are allowed. train with your “nipples out”.
“Thank you for taking the time out of your day to let me know that double standards and sexism still exist.”
Alongside her post, Julia added a photo of herself at the gym, staring at the black bra that had offended her, pondering what the “problem” was with her outfit.
“If the problem is that I will be a distraction, why doesn’t the responsibility fall on the distracted one?” he said, calling it a “deep-seated problem.”
“When will we stop monitoring women’s bodies and HOLD OTHERS RESPONSIBLE FOR SEXUALIZING THEM?” He said.
“And WHEN will we start ALLOWING women to feel comfortable enough in the gym to wear whatever is comfortable for them in an environment that is otherwise already uncomfortable?”
He ended his post by joking that he would wear a “brother tank with my nipple out” the next time he worked out, and the post quickly generated a lot of attraction and support.
“Political correctness went crazy! I don’t see any problem … except with the gym,” commented one.
“To me, you’re wearing standard gym clothes and you look amazing. If you were to distract me, it would be with admiration for your outfit and how hard you work, not because I can see your belly,” agreed another.
“This is crazy. From one woman to another, you move, you look amazing, don’t change,” another person wrote.
Others stated that the outfit was a “normal” outfit for a workout, while some called the move to kick her out of the gym as a “disgrace”.
“The way they treated you was disgusting,” added one man.
“I think it’s wrong,” mused another.
Julia regularly shares photos on Instagram from her workouts along with motivational captions to help inspire others.
She is not the first woman to have been expelled from her gym for an outfit deemed “inappropriate.”
Last month, Sydney’s wife, Gabi Goddard, was “asked to leave” her gym after being told her outfit showed “so much skin.”
The 27-year-old said she was approached by a staff member and asked to go home and “change” before she could continue her training while wearing a sports bra and gray “scrunch bum” shorts.
She said she was “appalled” by the way her outfit choice was being watched and called for the objectification of women to be stopped.
