Fire investigators following a fatal house fire in Palmerston North.
A woman died after a fire tore through a Palmerston North home overnight.
Emergency services rushed to the fire at Clutha Place, Palmerston North, at 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
The home was engulfed in flames upon arrival, Fire and Emergency spokesman Chris Dalton said.
The woman was taken to Palmerston North Hospital in critical condition, where she later died.

Police had stationed an officer on the scene overnight to protect the home and investigators were going through the ashes early Friday morning to determine the cause of the fire.
A witness to the fire, who did not want to be named, said she was watching television in her home when she heard windows shattering and screams from the house.
Believing it to be an incident of domestic violence, the witness ran to help the woman, but when she got out she saw smoke and flames coming from the windows.
The woman lay on the pavement near her home as neighbors tried to ease her pain before ambulance officers arrived to treat her.
