Berry’s brother, David, and his sister Joanna paid tribute to him at the memorial service.
David de Berry’s earliest memories were going to football games as a child in England. Berry was born in New Zealand, but the family moved to England for about three years when he was 4 years old.
“We were football fans, especially Martin.”
The family returned to Whanganui, with Berry attending Tawhero, St George’s and Whanganui collegiate schools.
David Berry said his brother was brilliant, studying four languages and playing cricket, soccer and chess. On the weekends, they would play at Virginia Lake or bike to Castlecliff to go fishing.
