A weather system moving south over the country is bringing heavy rain and strong gales in many places.

Fire and Emergency has received 12 weather-related calls in the Auckland area today, including the damaged home on Alexander St in Cocklebay.

The wild climate has also reduced power lines and more trees throughout the region.

MetService warned today that strong northwesterly winds would accompany heavy rains over the upper North Island, and gusts of more than 100 km / h were expected, particularly in Auckland.

MetService Meteorologist Tahlia Crabtree advised motorists to be careful when driving in wet and windy conditions, and urged those using fireworks to be careful as strong winds were expected to continue into the evening.

The weather is expected to clear tomorrow, but the rain will spread across the country on Saturday. A change in cold will result in a drop in temperatures on the South Island on Sunday and cooler air on the North Island on Monday.
