A white Christmas has arrived one day late for the Tasmania region, as heavy thunderstorms brought heavy rain and hail this afternoon.

Since then, the thunderstorms have moved to the northwest and are expected to be near Abel Tasman National Park, Motueka, Tasman Bay, Riwaka and Kaiteriteri, according to MetService.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed to 1 NEWS that they have received seven notices, all in Motueka, which consist of problems such as water entering through the roofs and the activation of alarms due to hail.

There are no teams to respond to floods of any kind, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said.

Network Tasman has since reported a break between Chamberlain Street and College Street in Motueka. Power is expected to return to the area between 6.30pm and 7pm tonight.

The Tasmania District Council told 1 NEWS that heavy rains in the region are beginning to subside and that there have been no significant floods or potentially surface floods to report.
