One man who saw Whāngārei’s elusive go-kart driver described his driving as “reckless” and his car as nothing more than “just a steel frame with the engine exposed.”
Police are looking for the reckless driver who has been reported for dangerous driving and failing to stop in front of officers.
Anthony Cannons, a trucker who works in the area, was picking up trash on Whaka St, in the suburb of Raumunga, about three weeks ago when he saw him.
“I heard a whistle very similar to that of a Formula One car,” he said.

“I checked my mirrors but didn’t see anything, and was about to go out to move on to the next bag. I only saw him when he appeared in front of me going at least 80 km / h in a residential area, before turning in front of the cars heading towards Raumunga Valley Rd.
“The kart had no panels, it was just a steel frame with the engine exposed. He was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear, and he was not on a proper go-kart track.
“His driving was reckless, and something so small and fast could have easily caused damage.”
Police confirmed that various members of the public have reported that the racing kart is being driven carelessly on the main roads Western Hills Dr and Otaika Rd.
The driver has also been reported for speeding and dangerous driving without wearing safety equipment.
The police want to identify the kart driver and his location in an attempt to avoid any harm.
Anyone with information should contact the Whangārei police and quote file number 201209/9799.
