Wet start of the new year in the south

The first day of 2021 will be fine for much of New Zealand, but some areas will see rain and thunderstorms as the new year begins.

MetService has forecast good weather for the entire North Island, Nelson and Marlborough.

There will be some areas of morning clouds and isolated showers in the afternoon and evening for the northern, central and eastern regions and for the Nelson and Marlborough ranges.

But otherwise, the north of the country will have a good day.

Buller and Westland can expect less pleasant conditions, with cloudy periods and isolated rains.

Rain should begin to develop in South Westland this afternoon and elsewhere tonight.

At Canterbury, there will be scattered showers starting this afternoon, with isolated storms, possible downpours and hail inland.

The Otago, Southland and Fiordland areas will remain cloudy with scattered showers, turning into rain this afternoon with heavy falls possible.

And the Chatham Islands today is expected to be fine with cloudy periods.

At 7 a.m., the hottest place in the country was Port Hills in Christchurch, which had a temperature of 15.7 degrees.

The coldest place was Taumarunui, with 10.1 degrees less mild.

The rest of the weekend doesn’t seem glitzy, so Kiwis may have to rethink their picnic, beach, and outdoor activity plans.

On Saturday, there will be showers across most of the North Island, some with thunderstorms and possible downpours.

On the South Island, there will be rains in the south, stronger in eastern Otago.

And rains are expected elsewhere, albeit only isolated in Marlborough, Nelson and north of Canterbury.

Sunday is rainier, with rains over most of the North Island, possibly heavy and stormy afternoon in the north and east.

These should be rinsed fine in the south at night.

Rain continues on the South Island on Sunday in the south and west, but will be fine elsewhere, aside from afternoon showers in the ranges.
