Parts of the east coast of the South Island could experience record warm weather this weekend.

MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris says the eastern South Island will start the weekend in warm weather, with temperatures in Christchurch and Kaikōura reaching 28 degrees on Sunday.
He said it would be close to a record for October, but would soon be followed by a frontal system bringing heavy rain.
“Most of that rain will fall in those western areas of the South Island. We have a heavy rain watch currently in effect as of Sunday, it is likely to be updated to an orange warning.”
“The places that need the rain the most, that is, the eastern parts of the South Island from Dunedin to Christchurch, will get some rain, but it doesn’t appear to be large amounts.
Ferris said most of the rain would come on the west coast, which had a heavy rain warning for Sunday.
He said the eastern South Island would receive some rain on Monday, before heading to Wellington later that day.
New Zealanders were warned to stay safe on the roads and continue public health measures to combat the Covid-19 coronavirus over the long weekend.
