Stormy weather will continue across much of the North Island this weekend.

MetService warns of severe thunderstorms, lightning and possible heavy rain across much of the North Island on Saturday.

The forecaster issued a severe storm watch for Northland and Auckland for Saturday afternoon and evening.

There is also a severe storm watch on Saturday for the Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupō, Hawke’s Bay, Taihape, Whanganui, Manawatū and Tararua.

According to the forecaster, there is a moderate risk that some storms will become severe, with possible localized downpours of 25 to 40 mmh.

MetService also has a rain warning and multiple rain clocks in place.

There is a heavy rain warning for the lower parts of the South Island, including the North Otago, Dunedin and Clutha areas until midnight Saturday.

There is also a heavy rain watch for Canterbury High Country south of Fairlie, Central Otago, Southern Lakes, and Southland north of Gore through Saturday night.

The humid climate is due to a low that moves slowly across the country. A trough associated with this low is expected to move slowly over the North Island on Saturday, causing widespread showers with isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy downpours, especially in Northland, eastern Waikato, the Coromandel Peninsula and Taupō.

There are also heavy rain alerts for the central and eastern Northland areas south of Doubtless Bay through Saturday night. In addition to Taupō, eastern Waikato and the Coromandel Peninsula south of Whitianga.

Heading into Sunday, the broad low covering the South Island is expected to move slowly eastward, as a slow-moving front spreads over the North Island.

The easterly winds and rain in the lower South Island are expected to turn into showers and southwesterly winds on Sunday, with more downpours and possible thunderstorms in parts of the interior of the North Island.

In the main centers, showers are forecast throughout the days, both on Saturday and Sunday in Auckland, with possible thunderstorms in the afternoons. A high of 24 degrees Celsius is forecast for both days.

In Wellington, rain and north winds are forecast, with a high of 20 ° C and a low of 14 ° C on Saturday. On Sunday, the rains are expected to clear up on a pleasant afternoon. A maximum of 19 ° C and a minimum of 15 ° C are forecast.

Tourists in Christchurch can expect occasional rain and northeast winds on Saturday, with some heavy rain in the afternoon. A maximum of 21 ° C is forecast, and thunderstorms and hail are also possible. On Sunday, the cloud is expected to clear up and become a mostly pleasant day, with a forecast high of 24 ° C and a low of 10 ° C.

For those traveling south, rain is in the cards for many areas in the south. In Dunedin, rain is forecast with a high of 16 ° C and a low of 13 ° C on Saturday. Sunday will also be a rainy day, with a forecast high of 19 ° C and a low of 13 ° C.
