A cold shift moving into the country is expected to bring some snow in early spring, along with a couple of chilly days.
MetService forecasts the possibility of snow on Friday at 600 meters on the Banks Peninsula, Canterbury High Country and Kaikōura, and on the North Island from Taumarunui and Taihape to Wellington and also in Wairarapa.
On Friday afternoon, 1 to 2 cm of snow is expected to settle near the top of Desert Rd. Some snow is also expected overnight Thursday and Friday morning at Porters Pass, with possible Snowfall Friday at Lewis Pass.
Heavy rain is possible and could include hail on Friday in the lower half of the North Island in Marlborough, but more stable weather is forecast for the weekend.

“Several of our weather stations on the South Island, as well as Wellington and Masterton, will have a difficult time reaching double digits for their maximum temperature tomorrow,” said MetService meteorologist Kyle Lee.
A combination of persistent cold southerly winds and stable weather meant that most of MetService’s weather stations would show temperature readings well below their average low on Saturday morning, Lee said.
“It’s going to be a cold start with most of the seasons on the South Island around or below 0 degrees Celsius, with the North Island temperatures also mostly below their average for this time of year.”
Much of the country is expected to have a good, but nimble, Saturday and Sunday.
Christchurch is forecast to hit just 10 ° C on Friday and dip to -2 ° C early Saturday. A high of just 9 ° C is forecast for Wellington on Friday, and the temperature will drop to 5 ° C overnight.
Central Auckland is expected to hit 14 ° C on Friday and Saturday, dropping to 5 ° C early Saturday and 6 ° C early Sunday. Pukekohe is forecast to drop to 2 ° C early Saturday morning.
Hamilton and Taupō are expected to drop to 0 ° C early Saturday and 1 ° C early Sunday, and Masterton to 1 ° C early Saturday and 0 ° C early Sunday.
Blenheim is expected to drop to -2C early Saturday, Nelson -1C,. Timaru -3C and Mosgiel -3C.
