Team NZ skipper Peter Burling edged out his counterpart Jimmy Spithill at the starting gates, and that was the closest the Italian team got in the first race.

There were multiple touchdowns for Prada as they headed for gate number one, while Burling had Team NZ flying. By the time they reached the door, they had climbed more than 30 seconds.

Downwind, the same thing happened with Team NZ extending their lead to 1m 13s.

With the lead still extended midway, Team NZ was practically racing. With the difference in speed in the wind of seven knots, the NZ team reached a maximum of 36 and Prada at 29.

With the advantage over 1600m at times, this first race will be demoralizing for the Italians and certainly for the other two rivals.

Te Rehutai crossed the finish line a staggering 3:13 minutes ahead of the Italians, in what was the perfect start for the New Zealand team and their fans.

It’s back on the drawing board for the Italians and skipper Spithill, who had positive things to say about Team NZ.

American Magic took the lead from the pre-start and didn’t look back during the showdown at the America’s Cup World Series regatta in Auckland.

”The New Zealand team did a great job, without too many mistakes. We lost our initial software, but they were a lot more accurate around corners. ”

Burling said he couldn’t believe how fast the ship could go.

“It’s amazing how fast and how fast they can maneuver. I really enjoyed the pre-start, then we clicked on them.”

In race two, America Magic took the early lead over INEOS Team UK, who effectively retired after breaking in the water, allowing their rivals to finish without competition.

In race three, it was Luna Rossa’s first win over INEOS Team UK, who again ran into technical problems and was forced to withdraw from their second race in a row.

The kiwis ran again at 5:20 p.m.
